Transylvania County are easily accessible; a
few are even visible from roadside stops.
Places like Looking Glass Falls and Sliding
Rock are well known attractions in Brevard.
On this page we’ve detailed a bit of
information on some of the lesser known
waterfalls in
Transylvania County NC.
Traveling along Highways US 64, US 276, and
NC 281 visitors can access and view places
such as Connestee Falls, Cascade Falls,
Slippery Witch Falls, Twin Falls and Toxaway
Falls.
Connestee Falls and Batson Creek Falls are
located off Highway 276 near Top of the
Falls Realty. You can take the short, paved
walkway to a very nice viewing spot and see
where the two falls come together in an area
called Silver Slip. Connestee Falls is
approximately 110 feet high and a truly
magnificent NC waterfall to see!
Cascade Falls is located on the north fork
of the French Broad River and offers some
truly spectacular scenes. The falls are
about 15 to 20 fee high here and the rock
formations are truly beautiful. Much
of the land surrounding Cascade Falls is
private property, however, the owners of
Living Waters Ministry allow the area to be
accessed by visitors. To get to Cascade
Falls take Highway 64 to the end and turn
north on Highway 215, the falls area about
7.5 miles after the turn.
Slippery Witch Falls is a gorgeous waterfall
that is very easy to get to as it is located
right alongside the road. To get to the
75-100 foot waterfall, visitors should drive
down Hwy 281 south, and turn right on
Whitewater Church Rd. The road bears a big
right in two places but eventually crosses
Mill Creek at the top of the waterfall,
which is a great place to park. Paths lead
from the top of the waterfall down to the
base and there are great viewing spots all
along the way.
The Twin Falls on the Toxaway River are not
very large waterfalls; however they are
located amongst some of the most beautiful
settings. The pool of water below Twin Falls
is shallow and a great place to enjoy on a
hot summer day however be sure not to get
too close to the actual waterfalls. Big
Falls is another set of “twin” falls hidden
away on the Thompson River. These elusive
falls are easily hiked to, however visitors
must cross the Thompson River in one spot,
so when the water is high, people are
encouraged to stay away.
Lastly, Toxaway Falls near Lake Toxaway are
easy to see off Highway 64. Toxaway Falls
waters cascade down a series of bedrocks
creating truly breathtaking scenery. Much of
this area has been developed in recent
years, however Toxaway Falls are still a
beautiful sight, preserved for
all to enjoy.
Many visitors may hear of the falls near the
Horsepasture River and want to view the
waterfalls in these locations. Currently,
many of the Horsepasture River falls are not
easily accessed due to the closing of the
Gorges State Park. Be sure to check access
areas and have up to date information.
When checking out the many waterfalls
throughout Transylvania County and Brevard
NC the US Forest Service Rangers have a few
suggestions. Never walk in the river or
waters above any waterfall, stay on marked
trails, do not climb on the rocks and
boulders near the waterfalls, stay out of
the waterfall’s immediate spray away and of
course, always keep a close watch on young children.
